NIE number or "Número de Identificación de Extranjeros"
What is it?
A Spanish NIE Number is a tax identification number for non-Spanish nationals and is a necessary requirement when undertaking certain activities involving Spanish assets. You will, for example, need an NIE number if you intend to:-
• buy, sell or rent a property;
• inherit Spanish assets as a beneficiary under a Spanish or English Will;
• open a bank account or borrow money i.e. mortgage;
• set up utility contracts e.g. gas, electricity and water.
